Student Advising
Advising Related Procedures & Information
Waitlists
- Waitlists are automated. Students receive an email when a space is available for them and they have 24 hrs to register through Duckweb.
- Waitlists are turned on for most business courses when registration begins and they activate when the class fills. They are turned off at 9:00 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the term.
- Instructors can see who is on their waitlist through Duckweb. Your waitlist is below your course list in Duckweb. Important note: this will disappear when the waitlist is turned off so instructors must print them if they want to keep their waitlist.
Over Enrolling Classes
- We cannot over enroll classes while the waitlists are still on.
- Instructors can sign a form after the first Wednesday for a student to enroll beyond capacity.
- Classroom seating capacities cannot be exceeded (not the same capacity as posted in the room).
- Whether to over enroll is the instructor’s decision in conjunction with their department head.
Honors Registration
- Lundquist College works to accommodate students in our Honors Programs due to the inflexibility of their schedules. Your class cap may be set artificially below the intended cap for the class to accommodate an honors student. These students enroll on the first Wednesday.
- These students are instructed to put themselves on the waitlist. Many work themselves into the class per this list and you never need to make any accommodations. However, some honors students may need your assistance accessing course materials until they can enroll.
Incompletes
- Incompletes are appropriate for a passing student with a minor requirement missing.
- The work needs to be completed within an academic year or the grade will automatically change to an F. You can set an earlier deadline if you’d like.
- It is recommended that you set up a contract in writing. Please notify the advising office so we can include it in the student’s advising file.
- Incompletes can be changed to a grade in Duckweb within the 1 year timeframe.
- Students should not be told to register for the course again! This will result in a new grade and the incomplete will change to an F.
Mandatory Attendance
- New policy, set by class (BA 308 or MGMT 311), not by specific section – see Department Head.
- If marked as Mandatory Attendance, you must take attendance on the first day and report absences to the Registrar’s Office (sched@uoregon.edu) so students can be dropped.
- An “instructor approval” flag will be added to your class, and any new enrollment needs permission from instructor; new students within university add/drop deadlines must be allowed to make up any missed work.
Pre-Requisite Checking/Waiving Pre-Requisites
- The UO has an automated system that checks for pre-requisites when students are registering and after grades come in for the previous term. Students who don’t meet them are either blocked from registering, or dropped from the course after grades are posted.
- Most upper division courses in Lundquist require admission to the major to enroll. We do have freshman direct admit students. Because of this, you will see additional pre-requisites on the class schedule to accommodate for those students.
- Individual course pre-requisites can be waived by a department or instructor based on the student’s circumstances. However, non-major or pre-business students who want to take courses need to be referred to the advising office.
Scheduling Testing Accommodations
- Many of our students have a disability that affects the way they learn and function in the classroom environment. We are legally obligated to make reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. These students are working with the Accessible Education Center (AEC) on campus and you will receive an email indicating how they should be accommodated.
- Most accommodations include some sort of alternate testing environment. If you are willing and able to provide this on your own, it’s encouraged. Otherwise, students schedule alternate testing through AEC’s website. They need to do this well in advance. Please note, if you make late changes to your testing dates that affect a student’s ability to schedule testing accommodations, you need to provide appropriate accommodations.
- Check out aec.uoregon.edu for procedures and best practices.
- Don’t hesitate to call AEC directly if you have questions about accommodating a student.
- Consider incorporating some of the AEC recommendations on Universal Design in your classroom. These help to provide wider access to education for all students.
Student Concerns
- Our students deal with many challenges while they’re here and, in some cases, you may have concerns about a student or encounter a difficult to manage situation. Please refer to the staff resources on the counseling center’s website for assistance - http://counseling.uoregon.edu.
- If you are concerned about a student’s well-being, in addition to working with the counseling center, please notify Heather Bottorff, Collette Niland, or Kim Rambo-Reinitz of the situation.
